What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Korea?

Korea is worth visiting in any season — but each offers a completely different experience. Here is a season-by-season breakdown to help you decide.

Season Months Temperature Best for
Spring Mar – May 10–18°C (50–64°F) Cherry blossoms, hiking, sightseeing
Summer Jun – Aug 25–35°C (77–95°F) Beaches, festivals, fewer tourists
Autumn Sep – Nov 10–22°C (50–72°F) Foliage, clear skies, cultural events
Winter Dec – Feb -5–5°C (23–41°F) Ski resorts, lower prices, winter food

Spring (March to May) — The most popular season

Cherry blossoms (벚꽃, beotkkot) typically bloom from late March to mid-April, transforming Seoul, Jeju, Gyeongju, and Jinhae. The Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival (early April) is the largest in the country. Book accommodation two to three months in advance during peak blossom weeks. Temperatures are comfortable — 10°C to 18°C — and the days are long and clear.

Summer (June to August) — Hot, humid, and festival-rich

Korean summers are hot and humid, with temperatures regularly reaching 33°C. The monsoon season (장마, jangma) runs from late June to mid-July, bringing several weeks of regular heavy rain. Summer advantages: fewer international tourists than spring, vibrant beach culture along the east coast and Jeju, and major festivals including the Boryeong Mud Festival (July). Air conditioning is pervasive throughout the country.

Autumn (September to November) — The finest season

Many Korea regulars consider autumn the finest time to visit. Temperatures cool to a comfortable 10°C to 22°C, skies are clear, and mountain foliage turns vivid orange and red from mid-October. Seoraksan, Naejangsan, and Bukhansan national parks are the top destinations for autumn colour. Chuseok (추석), the autumn harvest festival, falls in September or October — a significant cultural event, though it brings nationwide travel congestion.

Winter (December to February) — Cold and underrated

Korea's least crowded tourist season, with lower accommodation and flight prices. Ski resorts — most notably Pyeongchang (site of the 2018 Winter Olympics), Jisan, and Elysian Gangchon — are fully operational from December. Seoraksan and Gyeongju are beautiful under snow, and Korean winter food (hearty stews, tteokbokki, hotteok) is at its most appealing.

Short answer: For first-time visitors, spring (late March–early May) or autumn (October–early November) offer the most consistently pleasant combination of weather, scenery, and cultural activity. For budget travelers preferring fewer crowds: late January through February or late June offer good value with distinct character.
