Angel or Demon?
Most platforms avoid this question. They adopt AI tools quietly, without acknowledging the tension. Korea Gateway will not do that. We have a position — thought through carefully, argued honestly, and built into everything we do. Here it is.

Our position
AI is neither angel nor demon. It is a mirror.
It reflects what we bring to it. The question is not whether to use AI. The question is what you use it for — and what you refuse to let it replace.
Used with wisdom, intentionality, and a clear sense of what it cannot replace, AI is genuinely powerful. It can expand access, accelerate research, and reduce the friction between a good idea and its execution. These are real benefits. We use them.
Used without those things — used as a substitute for human judgment, human presence, and human care — AI produces something that looks like knowledge but isn't. Content that resembles understanding but is hollow at its core. Connection that mimics depth but has none.
The mirror does not decide what it shows. You do. Korea Gateway has decided — deliberately, with full awareness of the commercial pressure to decide differently — what AI will and will not be used for in everything we produce.
Most platforms make that decision quietly, or don't make it at all. We are making it explicitly, in public, because we believe our readers deserve to know exactly what they are reading when they read something with our name on it.
Honest accounting
We are not romantics. Here is what AI genuinely does well.
Refusing to acknowledge AI's real capabilities is as dishonest as refusing to acknowledge its limits. Korea Gateway does both.
We use AI tools in our work. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What matters is which tasks we use them for — and which tasks we refuse to hand to them.
Information retrieval and synthesis
Finding, organizing, and summarizing large amounts of existing information across sources. AI is faster and more thorough than any human researcher for this kind of work. We use it accordingly — as a research accelerant, not a research replacement.
Translation and language accessibility
Making content accessible across language barriers — Korean to English, English to other languages — at a speed and scale that makes the archive genuinely global. AI translation, reviewed by humans, has made Korea Gateway more accessible to more people than would otherwise be possible.
Operational and organizational work
Scheduling, categorization, tagging, archival organization, pattern recognition across large datasets. The operational infrastructure of a media platform involves enormous amounts of structured work that does not require human judgment. AI handles that efficiently, freeing our human capacity for the work that actually requires it.

Every story, essay, and profile published on Korea Gateway was written by a human being. AI does not write Korea Gateway's editorial content. Not partially. Not as a draft. Not at all.
Replacing human presence in the field
The relationship-building, the in-person interview, the earned access that makes our stories possible — none of that can be automated. Presence is the product. We will not simulate it.
Making editorial judgments
Which story to tell, which voice to amplify, which detail matters, how to frame what was said — these are human decisions, made with accountability. AI does not have editorial judgment. We will not pretend it does.
Generating or selecting images
Korea Gateway does not use AI-generated imagery. The images in our archive were made by human photographers who were present. That presence is part of what makes them truthful.
Simulating human connection or community
The Korea Gateway community is made of real people with real knowledge and real stakes. We will not populate it with AI-generated voices, AI-generated engagement, or AI-generated community members. Not now. Not ever.
Being honest
The pressure to automate is real. We feel it. We are choosing against it anyway.
We are not making this choice because it is easy. We are making it because we believe it is right — and because we believe the readers who rely on us deserve to know we made it.
We want to be transparent about something: maintaining this standard costs more than not maintaining it. In time, in resources, in the commercial opportunities we decline.
Every story Korea Gateway publishes represents hours of human presence, weeks of relationship-building, and the kind of editorial judgment that only comes from people who have been doing this for years. AI-generated content would be faster. It would be cheaper. It would allow us to publish far more, far more often.
We are choosing not to do that. Not because we are unaware of the capability, or because we don't understand the commercial logic — but because we understand it exactly, and have decided that Korea Gateway's value is inseparable from its human standard.
The moment Korea Gateway publishes a story that was generated rather than gathered, it becomes something different. It becomes another platform that produces content about Korea. The thing we are building — an archive that people can actually trust, that carries the weight of genuine human presence behind every word — would be gone. And it would not come back.
That is a trade we will not make. Not for efficiency. Not for scale. Not for anyone.

We are building a platform for the AI age. We are not building a platform that surrenders to it. Every story that appears on Korea Gateway was gathered by a human being. Every editorial decision was made by a human being. Every relationship that produced the access behind the story was built by a human being, over time, through presence and care and the willingness to be accountable to someone else's trust.
We use AI where it helps us do our human work better. We refuse to use it where it would replace the human work entirely — because that replacement would not produce something better. It would produce something that looked the same but was fundamentally hollow.
We think our readers can tell the difference. We think it matters that they can.
Korea Gateway's position on AI — stated plainly
AI is a tool. A powerful one. We use it. But the soul of Korea Gateway — the earned trust, the human presence, the editorial accountability, the genuine care behind every word — that is not a tool. That is the work itself. And no model update will ever replace it.
