Minhwa, re-read for today — old symbols of good fortune, painted in a living, contemporary hand.
A Korean folk-painting (minhwa) artist who keeps the auspicious symbols of the tradition but re-voices them in modern colour and composition — flowers that bloom, fish that swim toward happiness.

The essence of the work
She paints happiness — not the grand kind, but the quiet resilience of an ordinary day that nothing manages to ruin.
Shim comes to people slowly, but in painting she hides nothing. The brightness she is careful with in conversation opens fully on the paper: flowers pushed into full bloom, fish set moving, a whole reserve of positive energy spread across the surface.
Her path runs through fashion, hanbok and jogakbo (traditional Korean patchwork) before it reaches minhwa. From jogakbo she kept the asymmetric composition, the breathing negative space, and above all the visible hand-stitch — the mark of time a hand spent on the cloth. She still hand-stitches her fabric works today, matching thread to the painting or to the mood of the day, thinking of each motif's meaning as the needle moves: peony for abundance, tiger for protection, vase for peace in the home.
"내가 만개하는 것처럼, 너도 네가 하고 싶은 말을 모두 만개하게 하라."
"Bloom fully — as I do — and let everything you want to say bloom too." — from the Blossom series
Two bodies of work carry one idea. In Blossom (피어나다), a wish long held inside finds the courage to break its protective shell and burst outward — not gently, but with force. In Lucky Fish, fish carry people's wishes out into the world and return bearing fortune; where they are trying to arrive, in the end, is back to the self. Blue — the colour of her 2026 solo show — is the sea she lived beside: a colour that both conceals and reveals, calm and alive at once.
Understanding the work · minhwa 101
Read the symbols, and the painting speaks.
What minhwa is
Korean folk painting: pictures ordinary people once kept close to bless daily life — for long life, family peace, wealth and protection.
Why it matters now
The wishes haven't changed. A buyer today isn't purchasing decoration but a carrier of meaning — a small, modern object that quietly wishes its owner well.
These are not prints of a digital file. Each work is built in traditional Korean folk-painting materials, layered by hand — which is exactly what makes an original collectible.
